4th Annual 30 in 30...Day Eight - THE THING (1982)...

Man is the warmest place to hide.

This is up there with the best horror films of the modern age and perhaps of all-time. Hard to believe this was panned by critics and fans alike when it debuted in 1982. It has since reached cult classic status and almost universally praised by genre fanatics. Outstanding cast featuring Kurt Russell as MacReady, Keith David, and Wilford Brimley. Perfect practical gore and creature effects by Rob Bottin - still to this day, some of his work in this film is still untouchable. There is a great sense of claustrophobic fear as the team stranded in the middle of Antarctica tries to find this alien that can mimic any life form it touches.

The Thing still holds up today - there is so much to like here both in execution and theme. A true classic from the modern golden age that was the 1980s.

this is the one movie so far in your 30 in 30 that i want to one day give a chance. jock's mondo posters for this are so freaking good.

what about the remake? i might be more likely to watch that one first, much to your dismay haha

Absolutely watch the 1982 version FIRST. The remake is more of a prequel to be honest and I did not hate it as a LOT of fans did, but it cannot compare with the original. You need to experience Carpenter's far superior take as it was intended.
