4th Annual 30 in 30...Day 13 - NIGHTBREED (1990) - The Director's Cut Bluray
Clive Barker's lost monster movie from 1990 - I say lost because it was butchered and forgotten upon release and now nearly 25 years later, the lost footage has been restored and released on bluray! This is closer to Barker's original vision and he endorses this wonderful version now available via Scream Factory! Danny Elfman provided the score, his first project right after Batman in 1989.
"Everything is true. God's an Astronaut. Oz is Over the Rainbow, and Midian is where the monsters live."
A man named Boone is framed by his psychiatrist, Dr. Decker and he escapes to Midian, a refuge for monsters. Boone discovers his true "nature" here. Decker gives chase and Boone's girlfriend, Lori, is caught in the middle. Who are the real monsters - the deformed freaks who live in exile, or the evil men who would destroy what little they have left?
Tons of monsters and mayhem here - Barker creates an entire world of the weird with some of the best makeup and creativity in one film alone.
Both versions of the film are included in the outstanding bluray set and each has its merits I think. I'm glad to have a more complete version of Barker's vision - here are a few shots of the booklet that was included. Awesome.
I remember reading about this movie for months in Fangoria and Gorezone magazine back in the day. Loved it then, and love it now. Miss those days.
