End of the Year Horror Blow-Out...

Attempting to rectify my slack movie watching practices of 2013. Got two horror movies in this weekend. I wish I had caught them in the theater but alas...

First off - You're Next (originally released at festivals in 2011)...

A home invasion flick where a family is terrorized by a pack of animal mask wearing killers. It was a little been-there done-that in many ways, but still a very enjoyable horror film nonetheless. Sharni Vinson plays Erin, the girlfriend of one of the target family's sons. She surprises with a secret survival instinct that none counted on and makes for an interesting "final girl" here. Very creative / nasty booby traps await anyone who tries to escape the house - there are some genuinely scary moments throughout. Barbara Crampton of Re-Animator and From Beyond fame is featured and its very nice to see her again! One negative for me though, was that about halfway through the attack, we get to see the killers' faces cleanly. So when they put their masks back on, its just not as effective as it was before you knew who or what was behind it all. All in all, a quality horror film that could have used a tiny bit of editing and polish. A solid 3 out of 5 Khans!

What's that in the window?

Very cool graphical minimalist poster. Love the design.

Number Two on the list - The Conjuring.

Wow!!! I had heard great things and wanted to believe it was all that I had heard. I'm happy to say those reactions were RIGHT! Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play husband and wife Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren - based on the real life couple of the same name. Set in 1971, this is the story of their most challenging case - a malevolent demon that has latched on to a family that has just moved into a new home out in the country. It is shown that Ed has a room in their home where he keeps artifacts from all of their cases - a place to keep them safe and out of reach from others who would use them for evil. Of particular note is the Annabelle doll...and old rickety toy that a demon possesses in the epilogue - of course this is brought into play later on in the film. Once the Perron Family begin to notice strange paranormal occurences, they call on the Warrens to rid them of the evil spirit. And then the sh*t hits the fan. What is so effective about this movie is that might have 10 seconds of actual blood in the entire film. Everything is done through sound, scares and surprises...accompanied by a terrifying soundtrack and effective cinematography. The last third borrows heavily from The Exorcist in many ways, but its still its own film when all is said and done.

This would have been in my Top 5 films for the year easily had I seen it sooner. A great ghost story horror film. As I said, its a bit derivative in its most important parts, but its so well done otherwise, that can't detract from the film's effectiveness. 4 out of 5 Khans!

Oh yeah, and there's also this:

HOOOLLYY SSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

New Comics...12.30.13...

Snagged two back issues this weekend also. AV is on a year long hiatus but we got at least two "large issue" stories to tide us over. Snyder and Albuquerque have it nailed. One of my top 3 series going today.

Sketches revised...The Wolf finished?

Christmas decorations put back up..drawing table returned to operational status. First off, The Wolf finished up with some final detail and ink.

Age Spots...

I will prob end up coloring this one as well but for now I'm pleased. I like this one better than Fair entry from October.

Christmas Cheer...

First off, little brother came through yet again this year...rekindling some fond memories from the greatest decade...the 80s!!!

Vintage G1 Jetfire...my favorite Transformer of all time.

Oh yeah...that's the stuff.

Also, a nice little gem in addition...battle damage Skeletor. I HAD THIS back in the day, if you touch his chest armor, it changes to a more damaged section of chest. Not brave enough to open it yet but It will happen soon.

Parental units also came up with a nice surprise - a fully sculpted Gill Man Bank from the Black Lagoon. Look at the detail on that thing!

While picking up meds at CVS, came across this little surprise....for $1.07. BOUGHT.

Now for something really special...while looking for some other things, I came across these mini figures. I instantly recognized them as being part of a very old model kit from Empire Strikes Back. It was a snap together kit of the Battle of Hoth. It came with a plastic terrain painted up like the Hoth snow landscape and had several plastic AT-ATs, snowspeeders and an Xwing fighter. I loved that thing...

My figures...don't know how they survived for 32 years but here they are!

Does anyone know where these two gun/rocket launchers came from? I can't for the life of me remember what they are from??!!

Now one more thing...in addition to the Hoth minis...I also came across a Cockpit from the old Die Cast Darth Vader Tie Fighter toy that I used to have. Sadly the Tie Figher itself was long ago shot down and crashed in the Great garbage heap beyond but this little piece has survived. Included a pic, not mine, of the whole toy...the Vader piece would "plug" into the back of the TF. Awesome memory!

Not mine...

And now, at long last, a sneak peek at what's next...Oh yeah...

Battle Armor Lost Predator...

And Wasp Predator...

TOP TELEVISION PROGRAMS of 2013...900 POSTS!!!

My top 5 tv shows pretty much stayed the same - only the rankings have changed plus one major mover!

#5 GAME OF THRONES. Season Three.

"By what right does the wolf judge the lion?"

Gotta be honest, I expected a bit more overall in season three. It seemed as though season two set it up for some pretty big things. Not so fast. With that being said, there were still many twists and turns and advancement of character. I'm really starting to like some characters that they made you hate either by circumstance or their personal arc. Some lost their wankies, some lost their heads, and some lost everything. The Red Wedding. Damn.

#4 BREAKING BAD. The Final Season concludes.

"I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. And I was really -- I was alive."

The end of the saga with just about every loose thread tied up as you would expect. Way to go, Mr. White.

#3 THE AMERICANS. Season One.

"You're gonna to lose this war. You know know that right? You can torture me or you can kill me, but we are going kick your Motherland's marbled ass. And, there's nothing you can do about it."

Great first season of 80s Cold War drama. Can't wait to see where Season Two goes.

#2 THE WALKING DEAD. Season 3.5 and 4.0.

"You walk outside, you risk your life. You take a drink of water, you risk your life. Nowadays you breath and you risk your life. You don’t have a choice. The only thing you can choose is what you’re risking it for."

We had the second half of season three and the first half of season four in 2013. Woodbury burned, The Governor fled, the Prison suffered an outbreak, we had more deaths and an unexpected bloodbath for the midseason finale.

#1 HANNIBAL. Season One.

"I see his madness and I want to contain it like an oil spill.
--
Oil is valuable. What value does Will Graham's madness have to you?"

Outstanding first season of a show I thought couldn't exist, much less succeed. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter along with Laurence Fishburne and Hugh Dancy as Detective Will Graham. Blows my mind that this is on network television. Gruesome pyschological material and very heavy on the gore. Creepy and intense imagery, atmospheric music, and great overall storyline. Mikkelsen makes Lecter his own. Must. Watch.

Lots of inventive murder scenes are showcased in each new episode...but nothing...and I mean NOTHING...will top Episode 9's Corpse Tree Totem. Wow that's scary looking.

And coming in February 2014...

HONORABLE MENTION: AMERICAN HORROR STORY - COVEN

Season Three reinvents the series once again as a coven of witches lives in New Orleans and fends off voodoo queens, witch hunters, the undead and a frankenstein's monster. More focus than the previous season.
