4th Annual 30 in 30...Day 12 - ALIEN (1979)...

In space no one can hear you scream.

And with that everything changed. I really don't need to get into all the accolades this film so rightly deserves. We know it is great. We know it is iconic. And we know that the Alien is quite possibly the most unique film creature in movie cinema history - right up there with the Draculas, Wolfmans, and Godzillas of the world. After seeing this again for like the 100th time...I'm just gonna comment on some things I noticed and also some things that I like even after so many viewings.

The cast is perfect. Each actor is given a meaningful role and acts the shit out of it. There are no throwaways here and you absolutely get the feeling that they have been on this deep space mission together for a long time and know each other very well. I especially love the camaraderie between Brett and Parker - the main engineers of the group. Their constant grumbling and filthy mouthed muttering about the rest of the crew is hilarious and enduring all at the same time.

Hell, even Jonesy the cat gets a few good scenes!

Right at the beginning, this film immerses the viewer into a gigantic world. Not only are we trapped on a huge cavernous space freighter but it is dwarfed by the planet it lands on and the alien spaceship they ultimately find. Back in 1979 the "space jockey" was a mystery that would tease our curiosity for decades...who were those giant people and how did they get here. And what the hell exploded out of its chest?

One of the last surprises is Ian Holm's Ash turning out to be a crazed, malfunctioning android. He has the best line in the movie - one that doesn't bode well for the survivors at this point in the film:

"You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.

...

...I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality."

One of the best horror films ever. Pffsshh, one of the best MOVIES ever. It is as perfect as the xenomorph itself.

"Thank You."

For this reason alone, I consider my mission accomplished with you.

Go for the Bluray set - it's worth it - and is on sale often on AMZ. Good luck.
