John Carpenter's The Fog (1980)...
One thing about Carpenter's films - they don't beat around the bush and his approach is pretty straight forward. There is really no superfluous exposition and that's part of the charm of his films - this is simple ghost story. Considering it came out before the big slasher craze of the 1980s, it set the bar pretty high with regards to what it accomplished with its simple formula.
