New Comics...catching up and keeping track...7.24.14

I don't think I've posted any new comics since March of this year. My reading/purchasing has been sporadic in 2014. I'm leaning towards TPB collections more than single issues simply because I like getting a good sized chunk all at once for a bargain. Anyway, here goes...some of the highlights of the past 4 months...

Swamp Thing #30-33 - Charles Soule / Jesús Saíz & Javier Pina

The only comic that I must have every month. The stench of Rot World and its unfulfilled conclusion are gone. Alec Holland has shaken The Green to its very core and suffers attacks from all sides - stellar storytelling and hyper detailed, amazing artwork. I love this book and I hope the story of Swamp Thing continues for a long time.

Next up is a mini-series I've had my eye on for a while and finally took the plunge via Comixology.com...

The Royals - Masters of War #1-6 - Rob Williams / Simon Coleby

Set during the opening years of WW2, this centers around a British royal family who have superpowers and enter the war on the side of the allies to stop the worldwide bloodshed. By doing this, they incur the wrath of other "super humans" - mainly those of the axis powers like Japan and wildcards like Russia. Several real world figures like Hitler and Churchill makes appearances as this alternate history tale takes shape. We see very different outcomes in the Pacific theater of war as well as Stalingrad and the endgame in Germany. Coleby's artwork is great and the story is grounded in historic events with an added "super hero" twist. This isn't for the squeamish though, there is a reason Vertigo is releasing this. Ha!

Issues #1-3

Some of the artwork featuring Royal mutants and WW2 fighter planes. Awesome.

Issues #4-6

Also via Comixology is a great one shot...

Ministry of Space - Warren Ellis / Chris Weston

Another alt history tale about the space race and what would have happened had Great Britain been the first to attain the final frontier. Gorgeous artwork abounds...

I have finally started catching up to the current Batman title. Had not read anything since the end of the Death of the Family storyline.

Batman # 19 and 20 - Scott Snyder / Greg Capullo

This has been a long time coming. Great little Clayface story with some nice twists - also sort of an epilogue to the Death of the Family. Greg Capullo nails the artwork...NAILS IT.

Star Trek is in a bit of an "uptick" lately as well. Two issues of note...

Star Trek - The City on the Edge of Forever #1 (COVER OF THE QUARTER!!!)

Based on Harlan Ellison's original teleplay before changes were made for TV in the 1960s. This is harder edged tale and I can see why certain changes were made for Roddenberry's vision. But this is an interesting take on the beloved episode and the interior artwork is all painted by Juan Ortiz and JK Woodward.

Star Trek Special - Flesh and Stone - Tipton / Sharp

One shot tale featuring all of the doctors from all periods of Trek. Lots of emphasis on Bones McCoy as he appears in the opening scenes of TNG's Encounter at Farpoint. On point art and an interesting and fun story.

RoboCop #1 - Williamson / Magno

Serves as a direct sequel to the 1987 original, full of gore and satire. Love this.

Caliban #1 - Ennis / Percio

A new space horror tale similar to Alien and Event Horizon..a decent opening issue.

Also catching up on some long running favorites in TPB form...

Science. Bad.

Nuts.

And finally, some things to look forward to before 2014 is up...

TWD Volume 21...

Hellraiser: Bestiary

And the mega Prometheus / Alien / Predator crossover coming from Dark Horse Comics. I WANT IT NOW!!!
