The Best DIE HARD movie of 2013...
I got a chance to check this out over the weekend and figured it deserved a mention here. A gigantic cast of well known actors - Ashley Judd, Aaron Eckhart, Robert Forster (love that guy), Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, Cole Hauser, Rick Yune (Die Another Day) and King Leonidas..uh Gerard Butler. This isn't the most original modern day action movie ever but it is incredibly fun and has some epic battle scenes, esp in the first 40 minutes with the Assault on the White House grounds. There is a great opening scene with a hijacked C-130 gunship and some F-22 Raptors chasing after it. A ground assault with suicide bombers, RPGs and a crapload of .50 cal machine guns and explosions. Eckhart reminds me a lot of Harrison Ford's President from Air Force One. The supporting cast is great and Rick Yune (somewhat) reprises his James Bond role as a "bad guy" Korean terrorist. Butler is the typical tortured Secret Service guy who has fallen from grace and is thrust into the spotlight a la John McClane. Obligatory from-behind-main-character Poster shot above...
The plot centers around an effort to get the secret codes to a Top Secret US Government protocol called "Cerberus" and lay waste to our country. (Isn't the bad top-secret plan always called 'Cerberus' these days? haha!) Most of it is a big ridiculous - honestly, the White House is the most highly guarded building on the planet - but its not exactly Shakespeare either. It's not supposed to be. It's machine gun porn, a lot of sh*t-talking and high stakes consequences in a big action movie.
FOUR out of a possible FIVE Khans.
