The 80's were Totally Awesome...

Ok so I've been revisiting some old 1980s horror classics lately. This was a time before CGI and remake after remake that overruns the horror offerings today in 2011...below are some of the highlights of my recent trek through yesteryear:

First up 1988's remake (ha!) of THE BLOB

Goofy tagline: Terror has no shape

This came out when remakes simply weren't that common, and on top of that, it was damn good for the times. A young, bushy-headed Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith (of the current SAW films) star. Impressive special effects turn up throughout, especially when the Blob sucks an entire grown man down a 2 inch wide sink drain pipe. HA! Awesomeness. Also, this was one of the first movies that I remember seeing a kid get killed off onscreen. Not only killed, but melted with blob juice...wow.

Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith tremble in fear of the mighty Blob!

I'm melting!

Next up is 1986's NIGHT OF THE CREEPS...

Goofy tagline: The Good News is your dates are here....The Bad News is....THEY'RE DEAD!

Boy likes Girl. Girl dates Jock. Jock gets alien worms in his head. Boy and Girl use shotguns and flamethrowers to stop the invasion! Jason Lively, aka Rusty from National Lampoon's European Vacation, stars in this crazy homage to 50s alien invasion flicks. Lots of walking corpses and splitting heads thrown in for good measure - you see they get in through your mouth, and grow inside your noggin until they burst out and infect more people. Fans of the recent SLITHER will see where that movie got some of its inspiration here.

STRYPER RULES!!!! Only in the 80s...

And last but not least, 1986's DEADLY FRIEND...

Goofy tagline: There's no one alive who will play with the girl next door...

Ah, Wes Craven - this was billed as his "most terrifying creation" not quite two years after unleashing Freddy Krueger on the world. Somehow I don't think it was THAT good but anyway. A very young Kristy Swanson stars as the girl next door. When poor nerd Paul has his homemade ROBOT "BB" destroyed by the paranoid neighborhood old hag (Anne Ramsay of GOONIES fame) - he gets the bright idea to meld its brain with the freshly deceased body of Samantha (Swanson) when her abusive father accidentally kills her. Not only does he succeed, but she mimics robot pincers with her hands for the rest of the movie very convincingly as she goes on a killing spree! I told you - awesome...

BB...short for Bumblebee anyone? Hmmmm....

Take me to your leader....

YOU DO NOT WANT ANY OF THIS!!!!
