Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 25 ... "The day will come when everyone will know who you are but that day is not yet."

Damien: Omen II / 1978

Interesting sequel to the 1976 original - this is honestly more of a political thriller than it is a straight horror movie. Surely, some horrible things happen, but it's very much in the vein of what corrupt and evil moguls would do in the cut-throat world of international business...with the son of Satan thrown right in the middle.

Several tense scenes here: the crow attack, the elevator cord, the train yard and the beginning archeological dig cave-in. Damien will let no one stand in his way as his carefully placed assistants watch over his reign.

Nod to Lance Henriksen as a mysterious General where Damien begins his education.

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 24 ... "I can read - you see that shoe? That shoe says Adidas..."

The Program / 1993

This isn't a horror movie by any means, but it's my blog so I can do what I want! This is a pretty bad movie overall, but I will always remember it fondly as I was at the filming of several scenes in glorious Williams-Brice Stadium on the campus of THE University of South Carolina. It was filmed on the same day the Gamecocks shocked Tennessee 24-23 in 1992. The movie has a TON of 90s stars in addition to James Caan as head coach. Also starring Halle Berry, Omar Epps, Craig Sheffer, Kristy Swanson and Andrew Bryniarski as roid rager Lattimer. I remember there being a big "to-do" about a 'chicken' scene where the football team laid in the road in the way of oncoming traffic as a team unity ritual. Of course, some dumb teenagers tried it in real life and got killed so of course that scene was cut out of the film - it nows exists only on youtube. How different things are today!

Still love this movie to this day though, its really cheesy and funny and has a ton of glorious shots of W-B and the SC campus.

Pretty sure those were USC band members in the back wearing ESU uniforms for the movie...

Starting Defense!

Well that's pretty scary I guess...

Cause this is Thrillah!!!!

About the only time I'll ever try to draw Michael Jackson...Thriller Night!

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 23 ... "The monsters from Earth cannot win. I will get in touch with you, when you feel like giving up."

Destroy All Monsters / 1968 / Toho Japan

The ultimate Godzilla Film. Could be the ultimate MONSTER film. Literally every Toho monster that had appeared in a Godzilla film up to that time has a role in this. It has been referenced countless times or remade in movies, comics and video games. You can see the strings, and it doesn't even matter. So campy, badass and full of action and terrible dubbing if you catch it on American TV. If any Godzilla film should be remade, it should be this one...not counting Godzilla Final Wars of course. Space aliens, fire breath, cities destroyed, rocket ships. Awesome.

Screw this building...

Screw this building too...

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 22 ... "That's a good boy..."

Friday the 13th Part 2 / 1981

A sometimes overlooked yet worthy sequel to the original slasher classic. This is the first one where Jason is actually the killer - Ol' Sackhead himself! Very likable cast of goofball counselors, esp final girl Amy Steel. Takes place right after the first one and goes deeper into the story and can stand on its own - that's all you can really ask for here. Poor Mark falling down the stairs in his wheelchair...among some of the best kill scenes in the entire series...

Some 31 in 31 supplemental artwork and sketches...

I really like this one...almost looks official.

And some sketches from last night...

"Victims, aren't we all?"

"Nothing will stand in our way."

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 21 ... "Do you read Sutter Cane?"

In the Mouth of Madness / 1995

John Carpenter directs an H.P. Lovecraft inspired story - starring Sam Neill, Jürgen Prochnow, Charlton Heston and Happy Gilmore's grandmother. Ha! Creepy and full of monsters, axe swinging crazy people and end-of-the-world fueled imagery. Had a lot of fun with this back in the day and it still mostly holds up 20 YEARS (!!!) later. Love what Carpenter constructed here and the acting, especially Neill's is wonderfully over-the-top and wild eyed throughout. I only wish we got to see more of those Old Ones...

Carpenter staple...the long distance shot...

The Old Ones....more please!

Oh, Sam.

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 20 ... "Have no fear, little one... I am here to protect thee."

The Omen / 1976

Part of the mighty 1970s output of American horror. Came after Texas Chain Saw, Jaws and The Exorcist -- but before Halloween and Alien -- this might just be the scariest "satanic kid" film ever made. Outstanding cast featuring Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, and David Warner. Creepy and haunting Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack. Great filming locations in and around London with its many older, gothic features. So many great scenes..."It's all for you, Damien" / that damn Mrs. Baylock / the graveyard with the dogs / The priest on the lawn / just too many to name, and that final shot as Damien turns around to face the camera...

Such a happy family.

A recent soundtrack re-release...I love this cover, fans of the movie will understand its meaning. Creepy!

I may work up some posters for this one later...but for now...

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 19 ... "Take the plane."

Turistas / 2006

Not a bad little 'vacation gone wrong' film. Will get lumped with the likes of Saw, Hostel and Cabin Fever...but it survives on locale and tense situations if nothing else. Apparently, the country of Brazil wanted to ban this film because it portrayed their country as nasty, full of killers, and home to a mass black market for human organs. Now why would that be a problem? Josh Duhamel and Olivia Wilde star among some other slightly recognizable faces. Watch out for the bus trip, the skewer, cave swimming, and the operation scene. Yikes!

Fifth Annual 31 in 31...Day 18 ... "Will you be my daddy?"

The Brood / 1979

Art Hindle (Black Christmas) stars as a father struggling with saving his little girl during a custody battle with his emotionally unbalanced wife. She is being treated at a clinic run by Oliver Reed (Gladiator) as emotions breach the surface and weird killer freaks run amok. You can always count on David Cronenberg to go "out there" with the family themes and body horror. A lot of nice background and textured buildup to the crazy finale. It's pretty tame when considering Cronenberg's 80s output, but there are some truly shocking moments. Been hearing about this one for ages, glad I finally watched it.

A really nice Criterion bluray cover that was recently released.

"It's a good bet the Empire knows we're here..."

Keepin on, keepin on! An Imperial probe droid. I have some in progress shots I'm gonna throw up here first...then the final finished piece.

Final contrast...
