New Sketches....One done and another one thrown in...

So Jason unmasked was pretty much done last week..put a few small details in and signed off on it last night.



Then for fun, I got a quickie Mumm-Ra in too! I never really noticed how much he resembles an asian dragon/anime villain until I drew him last night. Ha! Still a quick and fun exercise. .05 Pen and Sharpie...

30 in 30 - DAY FOUR - I, MADMAN (1989)

What is it with all of these movies from 1989 lately? Ha! Here we have another "stinker" from the late 80s decline. It wasn't a terrible film, just very formulaic/derivative. Girl reads horror novels and as she does, the things she reads start to come to life. Murders ensue, her policeman boyfriend doesn't believe her story, and then the killer begins to stalk her by the end! A decent protagonist, some good SFX, but some really terrible acting. It's a b-horror movie for sure and if you're looking for that kind of thing, then you will enjoy this. Hell, there is even a hairless, stop-motion animated monkey demon that shows up too! Have fun with it!







I remember this getting the cover of Fangoria back in the day as if it was some sort of second coming horror hit. I had to laugh then (and still do now) over the "More over, Freddy" line. Yeah right.

30 in 30 - DAY THREE - SOCIETY (1989)

Some crazy movies came out in the late 80s! Haha. From Brian Yuzna, producer of the original Re-Animator and director of its sequel, Bride of Re-Animator comes this wacko movie. A clear commentary on social classes and the limitations that come with that. A Rob Lowe lookalike (Bill Warlock - yes that's his real name) slowly discovers his adoptive family is not what they seem to be - soon enough, the slime flows and the mutations run amok!





"You're right, son...I AM a Butthead." HA!!!



You have to see this movie to believe it. Yuzna has a lot of fun here, but I can see why European audiences LOVED IT back in the day and why American audiences didn't dig it. It wasn't released over here until 1992.

30 in 30...DAY TWO....PSYCHO II (1983)

After 22 years, Norman Bates is coming home...

I have to admit, I haven't seen any of the Psycho sequels other than some crappy made for TV movie about the Bates Motel that came out in the mid 80s. I imagine this came about because it was cool to have a sequel to EVERYTHING then. There really isn't a reason for this to exist other than to see our favorite mother's son again and suck some more money out of horror movie fans. That's not to say its a bad thing - this is a fairly well constructed sequel - Perkins plays an "older" Norman about as good as can expect and the supporting cast of Meg Tilly (sister to Jennifer Tilly), Dennis Franz (Die Hard 2) and Robert Loggia (ID4, Scarface) get a fair amount of play here.





This must have made at least decent money back in '83 as a Psycho III came out a few years later. Most of this centers around some relatives of the victims from the original trying to frame Norman for more murders and send him into a downward spiral of insanity. Despite their best efforts, Norman doesn't sway until the last 10 minutes or so and then that's where an ending comes completely out of left field. It's unexpected but not entirely a cheat either. I've always heard about the ending with the shovel, and now I know why it is fondly remembered by fans of the film.



Can't wait to see what Psycho III has in store!

30 in 30...DAY ONE...Night Life aka Grave Misdemeanours (1989)...

The first (and last time) I heard about this film was on the cover of Fangoria #82 WAYYY back in 1989/1990.



I don't think that this ever got a theatrical release as it came in on the tail end of the 80s Golden Age. It's not very original nor is it any more than a polished B-grade zombie fest. That being said, it's still a pretty fun film as long as you keep expectations low and just go with it. There are some neat special effects for the time but I imagine a lot got cut by the MPAA and we'll never see that stuff again. Sad.



Also of note are three major stars that would go on to bigger and better things and one that had already established himself by the time this debuted. Scott Grimes of Critters fame (1986) would later go on to portray Don Mularkey in the HBO Series Band of Brothers. Mark Pellegrino stars as a high school jock turned living dead corpse, he would go on to star in ABC's LOST as the mysterious Jacob character. And finally, Jon Astin aka Gomez Addams from The Addams Family! What a crowd!

OCTOBER 1 – 2013. 30 in 30 BEGINS ANEW!!!

Here we go again...

For the third year in a row in October, I'm diving in to my yearly movie marathon. There won't be a single theme this year as in year's past. I'm keeping it loose. Mostly, I will be revisiting some horror classics but the occasional action adventure or scifi epic will sneak in. To celebrate, I will create a poster one day, some screenshots the next or just a few words and thoughts on each film. Gonna keep it random and fun. Never know what might happen! So...

Here it comes...
